Happy Fall Part 3

I meant to take a picture of the tree outside of my mom’s house this morning because the leaves have turned and it’s beautiful. It’s the best the tree has looked all year in my opinion. But I was juggling my daughter and my nephew while trying to find an old football jersey of mine that would fit my mini-me and I spaced it. It’s Red Ribbon Week and baby girl is taking it very seriously.

It is truly fall and we are in that weird stage here where you need a coat in the morning and a light jacket by 2 pm. I love it.

Anyways…

I know why you’re here so let’s get to the books!

Top Reads of the Summer!

The chill in the wind reminded me that I hadn’t posted this yet. The reviews have been written in a notebook and I’ve been so deep into trying to write my own book that I haven’t come up for air. My habit tracker also told me I’d been neglecting the blog. (But!!! I’m trying to write a book yall! The thought terrifies me and makes me giddy because this is the dream.)

Thank You for Listening by Julia Whelan

Robyn Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

I loved this book. I thought the main character, Swanee, was complex and it was easy to relate to her despite our differences. Sewanee is a former actress who became an audiobook narrator after a freak accident caused her to lose an eye. She struggles with her appearance and the dream that was snatched away from her. This makes it harder for her to navigate relationships with men. It also affects her self-esteem and confidence. She’s snarky and funny. I don’t want to spoil much because this book has a mistaken identity trope and it was fun to watch it play out.

My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing

Robyn Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

I’ll be the first to tell you that I don’t read thrillers often but when I do I absolutely love an unreliable narrator. The husband in this book is both a liar and completely clueless when it comes to his wife. This book was a rollercoaster of twists and chaos. My advice: clear your schedule for the day, grab some snacks, a blanket, and your beverage of choice because this is a book that is hard to put down.

This Poison Heart by Kalynn Bayron

Robyn Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5

I love this duology so much. Kalynn Bayron is on my must-buy list and her covers are everything! I would have loved to see girls that looked like me on covers when I was younger. I love seeing them now. I do need to do a full review for This Wicked Fate but the main thing I can tell you now is that you need to read these two. Black Girl Magic at its finest.

You can find my full review on This Poison Heart here.

House of Sky & Breath by Sarah J. Maas

Robyn Rating: allllllllllllllll the stars

This is book 2 of the Crescent City series and I almost want to say it is my favorite of SJM’s book series. I’m hesitant to say so though because I can’t choose between the three. ACOTAR has Rhysand 😍 and ToG has Caelaena and the masterpiece that is Empire of Storms.

I feel like the ending of this book is one that shouldn’t be spoiled so I won’t give anything away, however (insert excited squeal here)!!! I absolutely cannot wait until book 3. I think I check for updates a couple of times a week. 😂 Where is the news at Sarah???

This book was stressful to read because I was so worried about the characters. The stakes are high, so very high, and the crew is capable but the whole situation screams recklessness. Run, don’t walk, and read this series. These books are a bit on the hefty side but I enjoyed every single minute of them. This will be a series I read over and over and I don’t reread often.

Omg, we are finally done with my Summer Reads list! You’ll be happy to know that I am writing my Fall Reads Round-up as I go along. Although unfortunately, I haven’t read many that have qualified. We are 5 weeks into fall and I’ve only rated 3 books 4+ stars. (I’ve read 19.)

Happy Halloween! Is anyone dressing up? I told everyone I was going a tired mom 😂

I hope y’all get the best candy!

Happy Reading!

An Honest Lie by Tarryn Fisher

I’ll be the first person to tell you that I don’t spend a lot of time reading thriller books. There is just a certain level of “Oh hellll no” that runs through my blood which makes it hard for me to settle into the story and enjoy it. However, I’ve already read a couple of Tarryn Fisher’s books and you never really know where the story is going. It’s always like watching an accident happen. You just can’t look away even though everything in you is saying “there ain’t no way…”

That being said, my reviews on any thrillers are going to come with a bonus of my thoughts while reading the books. No worries, I’ll put up spoiler warnings around them so if you want to skip them until you’ve read the book, you can.

Let’s get into it.

“I’m going to kill her. You’d better come if you want to save her.”

Robyn Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5
Goodreads
Storygraph

Plot: Rainy is an artist who moved from NYC to Washington for love. Grant has this established group of friends that he pushes her to try to get closer to. Rainy reluctantly agrees to their gatherings until a girls’ trip to Vegas comes up. She refuses but later finds out that Grant already purchased her ticket.

The story is told in a now-and-then format. We learn through flashbacks about Rainy’s past and the dangerous secrets that lie there. When her past catches up to her in Vegas, Rainy has to get creative to save herself and another.

In the first few pages, you get settled into the story. The characters are introduced and I spent a fair amount of time lamenting the fact that I was reading middle age women’s issues and dreading it. Nothing like a reality check in a fictional book. Then it picks up, and it was like a marathon race to unravel all the pieces of Rainy’s past and why they matter 20 years later.

I think that this story could have been shorter. The chapters from the past are where all the drama is in the first half of the book and then in the end everything catches up to Rainy and it gets overly chaotic in the end.

Characters: I couldn’t relate with any of the characters honestly but I do understand how a mother’s decisions in a critical moment can affect the daughter’s life. From both sides. So that is what I am choosing to take from this book. As a mother, I have had to make some hard decisions in these last couple of years and I often wonder and worry about how my decisions will affect my children right now and as adults. As a daughter, I have been confronted with the consequences of decisions my mother made when I was a child. I always tell my kids that there are consequences to every decision they make. I feel that it is my job to make sure that they learn to stop and think things through so that they can be prepared for anything. Including the things we didn’t think could happen or never dreamed would happen. Someone should have had this conversation with Rainy’s mother because I spent some time very upset with her while reading this one.

Oh and Grant’s friends, overall as a group, suck. I would not want to be friends with any of them.

Thoughts while reading:

you have been warned. Skip to the next GIF if you haven’t read this one.
  • Omg am I really old enough for middle age women problems. Eww.
  • What exactly happened in Nevada?
  • Did this woman just join a cult with her daughter?? Can I even read this?
  • whatever Rainy isn’t telling Grant needs to be talked about. It’s obviously heavy and she’s going to continuously be put in uncomfortable situations if she doesn’t just come clean.
  • This woman joined a cult with her daughter and is now bothered by the way it’s changed her daughter. 😒😒 what did you expect? She’s surprised the cult has turned her daughter against her.
  • Summer journals her thoughts and sends them to Taured. Wow. Just wow on so many levels.
  • Trigger warning: rape description.
  • Sooo human trafficking? Underage girls.
  • This is so tense. I’m reading this like I’m watching a train wreck. Whatever is happening is horrible but I need to know how she escaped.
  • Why haven’t I read this before? Im so sucked into this story. Although this whole Braithe thing is a bit weird. Hopefully it wraps up soon.
  • Are we really having a “The Boy is Mine” conversation while being kidnapped? We’ve got bigger fish to fry. Wtf.
  • Oh okay it’s like a dying confession. I guess.
  • Wait a fucking minute. She sent that email to fucking Taured???? What about the police??? You called out to another monster for help? A monster you narrowly escaped?
  • Oooh okay well played.

Happy Reading!

#TBT Throw Back(list) Thursday

OMG TWO posts in a week?!?!?!?!

So as you all know there was a significant amount of time that passed that where I was not posting and not reading but WE ARE BACK ON THE GRIND!! Which means there are quite a few books that were neglected that I have to tell you all about.

So I introduce you to our new weekly feature:

Throw Back(list) Thursday #TBT

1. Take A Hint, Dani Brown by Talia Hibbert

Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️/5

Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/49976087-take-a-hint-dani-brown

Review: Another great book from Talia Hilbert. If you are in search of a smart, funny, sexy love story you found it. Dani is a professor who hasn’t been a relationship since the first guy broke her heart. Zafir works security at her university. He is large and grumpy and everyone is afraid of him but Dani. She was honks he is a teddy bear. Zafir was a former soccer player who quit when he lost his brother and father in a car accident. He doesn’t believe in sex without a relationship, and Dani only wants sex with no strings attached. When dani gets trapped in the elevator during a drill, zafir rushes to her aid and carries her out of the building. That footage is leaked and it brings a lot of attention to Zafir’s foundation to help boys. Zafir is convinces by his family that this great publicity for his foundation. He has Dani to be his fake girlfriend and they begin a “relationship”. Their chemistry is undeniable and Dani finds zafir’s understanding of her schedule endearing.
I would definitely recommend this. I love all the worry dialogue and the steamy love scenes.

2. Stay Gold by Tobly McSmith

Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️/5

Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/45306326-stay-gold

Review: This reminded me of If I Was Your Girl except it’s a trans boy. It’s heartbreaking, and thought provoking. Pony is has transferred to a new school because of all the attention at this old school. His father isn’t addressing him with his preferred pronouns. He just wants to fly under the radar at the new school. Georgia is a cheerleader who just broke up with her jock boyfriend. She is starting to feel like there is more to life. She promises herself she will stop dating but when she meets Pony sparks fly. Pony isn’t out and isn’t ready to be out but has feelings for Georgia. I love how the story unfolds. I would definitely recommend this book to others but it is a hard read.

3. Cinderella is Dead by Kalyan Bayron

Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️/5

Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/43900612-cinderella-is-dead

Review: This was a very unique take on the Cinderella story. I cheered for Sophia the entire time and enjoyed every bit of her journey. There is absolutely no way for me to summarize this story without giving spoilers so here are some things I want to highlight. Sophia is black obviously from the cover. This does feature a f/f couple and nothing is as it seems. Like I mentioned before, this is a very unique take on this particular fairytale that we have seen done hundreds of ways. I’ll recommend it to anyone who likes retellings and strong female leads.

Thank you Netgalley and edelweiss for a copy of this eARC in exchange for a honest review

4. A Song Below Water by Bethany C. Morrow

Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️/5

Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/39085465-a-song-below-water

Review: The best part of this book was the sisterhood between the two main characters. Their story was about discovering themselves and each other and it was not romance driven at all. The worst part of the book was the use of the word legiterally. I cringed every time I read it.

This is a powerful book to read right now as it speaks about discrimination, prejudice and the fallout from both. It speaks about how to the characters handle being “different.” It speaks about sisterhood and the importance of having at least one person in your corner.

5. Burn Our Bodies Down by Rory Power

Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️/5

Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/52748041-burn-our-bodies-down

Review: This book was so good! I went into it blindly and I’m so speechless. It gets the best after 50% just so you know. Once you hit that part you won’t be able to put it down! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time! So many twists and turns at the end! The writing style was spectacular! I can’t wait to read more by this author

Guess who’s back!!! Omg this… (gestures everywhere) has thrown off our reading schedules but I think we are back. June was a rough month reading wise, so bad we shall never speak of it again.

(Ugh I just broke an important key on my keyboard 🤦🏽‍♀️ the freaking delete button. 😩)

Let’s get started!!

Here are the ones we got through for today!

1. More Than Just a Pretty Face by Syed M Masood
Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/42655335-more-than-just-a-pretty-face

Review: I loved this book. It made me feel the full range of emotions and it made me think. That’s all it takes from me to give a book all the stars. Danyel is a senior in high school. He doesn’t do well in school. He wants to be a chef and marry his best friend’s sister. She is a beautiful girl. Danyel’s mother doesn’t think she is the one and neither do his friends. 2. You Had Me at Hola by Alexis Daria
Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/52886627-you-had-me-at-hola
Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️/5
Review: Loved it. Everything I want in a romance bonus the characters are all Latinex. This book is fun and sexy. Jasmine has just been dumped on tv by her rockstar boyfriend. She is moving from LA to New York to start working on a new show for flix. Her family lives in New York and although she loves them, it is easier when they aren’t in the same city. Ashton has been in Miami starring in telenovelas but he wants to make the leap to larger productions. His family and his son live in Puerto Rico. He had a stalker when his son Yadiel was a baby and he decided to keep him out of the spotlight. They both plan to keep the set strictly business but fate has a different plan. They have chemistry and when they start to rehearse together, they start to have feelings for each other but things get complicated. I won’t go further but I definitely recommend picking this up for a steamy, fun read! -S

3. Bookish and the Beast by Ashley Poston
Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/45167534-bookish-and-the-beast
Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️/5
Review: Excuse me while I wipe away my tears from that extremely cute ending…

Thank you Edelweiss and Random House for a copy of this eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Since I absolutely adored the first 2 books in this series I knew I had to get my hands on this one.

Rosie meets a super cute and intriguing guys at Excelsicon and has a great night but they don’t exchange information or even tell each other what their names are. Ahhhh I don’t want to spoil it! Read the book!! If you’ve read book 1 and 2 and loved them… get ready for this installment of this feel good romance series. For those who haven’t started the series yet… do you like comic cons? Fanfics? Sci-fi and space adventures? With a heavy sprinkle of YA romance? Pick up this series. -J

Amazon: https://amzn.to/33pjW7J

4. The Black Kids by Christina Hammonds Reed
Goodreads:
Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ /5
Review: This book is well done. It’s very relevant to what’s going on as you read this. It addresses identity, racism, institutionalized racism, mental illness. It’s a hard read but it’s real.

Ashley lives in la with her parents. She lives in Brentwood and goes to a private school. All of her friends are white. Her sister dropped out of college and moved closer to downtown LA and eloped. Ashley is trying to discover herself thru her relationships and family. She is graduating this year. At the same time, LA is awaiting the results of the Rodney King Verdict. She has been friends with the same three girls since elementary. She knows their friendship isn’t the same anymore but it’s graduation year. We watch her and her family react to the verdict. As things begin to happen, her family begins to learn more about themselves and each other. There are family secrets that have been hidden. New Release Day! (April 21st)

Hi everyone! I am inching my way back onto social media but I am not quite ready to be on full time. (Honestly, I missed the memes 😆) I don’t check it as much as I used to and I feel a little lighter. Although homework is still a problem 😑 so I am going to buckle down on that. I swear I’m behind on everything but my Fiction Workshop class. Anyway lets get to the true reason we are here.

NEW BOOKS!

1. The Business of Lovers by Eric Jerome Dickey
Rating: DNF @17%
Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/52764760
Review: I only made it 17% into this book and I just could not go on. Which was a struggle because I typically have 25% rule for my DNFs. I don’t know if it was the dialogue, or if I just couldn’t connect to the characters as a whole due to their lifestyle. But I know I threw in the towel after the male anatomy was referred to as an “emoji” multiple times. It would have been one thing for the actual emoji was used in the book (🍆) but to actually say the word emoji out loud in reference to… never mind you get it. I couldn’t handle it. It was too much. I’m sorry. I tried. Like I really really tried.

2. Late to the Party by Kelly Quindlen
Rating: ALL THE STARS
Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/44581495-late-to-the-party
Review: Ok I loved this book. It wasn’t what I was expecting and I’m ok with that. It’s a raw coming of age queer book about Codi. She has two
Friends Marizita and JaKory. It’s the summer before senior year and the plan to do the same things they do every summer. But Marizita wants to spice things up and go to a party. Codi decides not to go because it isn’t in her comfort zone. She wants things to stay the same. When try call her to come get them because they are too drunk to drive she meets Ricky. Things change from then on. She starts to Do things she never has. She begins to have more of a Social life that doesn’t include her old
Friends.i really loved how realistic it was to how you feel when you are in high school trying to fit in and have new experiences. I love all the side characters. The book is really inclusive. There are characters of all ethnicities and sexual orientation. I think this a wonderful coming age story that everyone would love! -S

3. You Let Me In by Camilla Bruce
Rating: 4/5 stars
Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/45046574
Review: What a crazy and weird novel! I don’t quite know what to make of it but I loved it! It’s about scary fairies and family drama. I dare you to try to read this! You will be sucked in and won’t be able to stop. It was a very quick and easy read! -K

4. The Silence of Bones by June Hur
Rating: ALL THE STARS
Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/44280973-the-silence-of-bones
Review: This book was so beautiful and emotional. The characters really pulled at my heart and the mystery kept me guessing! I am sad that this was a debut book! I need more from this author and everyone needs to read this beautiful book! -K

5. Little Secrets by Jennifer Hillier
Rating: ALL THE STARS
Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/45046683
Review: Wow! Just wow. I don’t even know where to begin or how to express my feelings for this book. It is a quick and easy read. Very fast paced. You are always left wanting more and wanting to know what is happening! I swear each chapter ends in a cliffhanger, it’s crazy! This book was also a hard read for me. Hit home a lot and I was left crying in the end but if you love thrillers like me then this is a must read and if you haven’t read her other book, Jar of Hearts you better do that too! I love her writing and I’m here for everything she writes! 10/10 recommend -K

6. Girl Gone Viral (Modern Love #2) by Alisha Rai
Rating: 3.5/5
Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/44148565
Review: I debated over this one. In the beginning I was trudging through it. I didn’t really care about the characters and I think I discovered that I don’t really care for stories told in 3rd person. But then… I cared. When they were at the farm I became invested and I couldn’t put my kindle down. I wanted to know that both Kat and Jas would heal from their pasts and overcome the obstacles and find their way to eat other and when they did… I loved every minute of it. Also the scene where the grandpa pretended to be sick was hilarious! I don’t think I’ll forget it. -J

7. Eat and Love Yourself by Sweeney Boo
Rating: 4/5 stars
Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/51252946
Review: This was a great graphic novel. I liked the inside look at eating disorders and how things might affect you that people might not think is important enough to. As a child overhearing your parents discussing you could lead to hang ups as an adult. Flippant remarks from friends who mean no harm might hurt. Also in order to improve your self esteem you have to understand where your problems lay and face them head on and it was moving to see Mindy do just that. Plus the art was beautiful! I’ll be looking into other graphic novels by this author. -J

There you have it. There are a couple great ones on this list. Pull out your TBR and jot them down! Hopefully I’ll be back sometime soon but you can definitely count on New Release Day posts.

New Releases this week (Sorry I’m late)

How is everyone doing?? I am still struggling when it comes to adding gifs to my blog posts since FB messenger no longer allows you to save the gifs to your device. So sadly… again… this will be a gif less post.

I know everyone is kind of in a whirlwind with all the stuff about the plague going on in the world. I have had a hell of a time keeping my kids entertained and trying to keep my parents in the house. Homework is suffering due to anxiety and so has the blog. BUT no worries, I am working with the besties and we are trying to come up with a plan to keep the reviews coming to you and an event or two.

That being said… Let’s talk about the books that we got ahold to this week!

THRILLER WEEK!

1. All the Pretty Things
Rating: 4 Stars
Goodreads Link: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/51960675-all-the-pretty-things

I was so excited to read this one and it didn’t disappoint! It is a great mystery/thriller and well written. It wasn’t what I was expecting but that’s okay! It was still such a good book! I was expecting a crazy murder mystery in a small town but instead it uncovers secrets and mysteries in a family. I loved the setting of the book being in an amusement park. The novel was paced perfectly and everything comes together at the end. I loved it and highly recommend.

2. All Your Twisted Secrets
Rating: 4 Stars
Goodreads Link: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/41443369

I love thrillers and mysteries so I was so excited for this one! I loved the writing style. It switches between present and past and is told in one of the main characters perspective. Slowly we find out more and more and it really builds up. I loved how you get to uncover how all the characters are connected and what had happened in the last year. I really connected with the characters and felt all the emotions with them. I was shocked at the ending and didn’t see it coming AT ALL. This book was more than just a thriller, it had important life lessons in it too. I highly recommend this one!

3. Darling Rose Gold
Rating: 4 stars
Goodreads Link: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/49223060-darling-rose-gold

Mother vs. daughter. Crazy vs. crazier. Who will win in the end?! This book kept me Engaged and wondering what the heck is gonna happen next! I couldn’t put it down. It is fast paced, entertaining and interesting. A quick read. The book is split between the mothers POV and the daughters POV. It reveals the sick minds of both of them from abuse. Both are unreliable and deranged in their own way. They are both very flat and nonchalant about the things they do which is so crazy and interesting. They both do crazy things and don’t think about it and just move on. I highly recommend if you like crazy physiological thrillers

There we have it! So if you are looking for a good thriller, you have some good ones here.

Before I let you go… pay attention to this space. Lots of ideas are being tossed back and forth and hopefully some of them will come into fruition soon. (There is even talk about a YouTube channel 😮)

This weekend I am participating in 24in48’s social distancing readathon so you will hear more from me than usual in the next 3 days. If you want to join search for 24in48 on IG, Twitter and FB.
